If you haven’t already noticed, we are pretty avid rock climbers and have been sampling the top Asian destinations for climbing. One style of climbing is called Deep Water Soloing or DWS. Gabe tried DWS during his first trip out to Thailand in 2006. It was Maria’s first time going DWS.
Basically put, DWS is solo rock climbing above a body of deep water to protect you when you finish/fall! It’s a little unnerving for those who have never jumped into deep water…but doesn’t that add to the excitement? Here we are setting up for our first climbs on Hawaii 5-0 Wall near Tiger Beach in Vietnam:
Now for the deep water part…basically you either jump or fall off at any given time:
And remember, never go deep water soloing without checking the local tide charts! If you’re a beginner, it’s best to go with a guide or some more experienced friends. Just getting onto the rock can be a little tricky if you don’t time it well with the tides!
