When we first arrived in Karimabad in the Upper Hunza region of Pakistan, it was apparent that the tap water was not for drinking. We barely wanted to use it for showering. Our poor SteriPEN pre-filter + ultraviolet purifier didn’t stand a chance to this dark glass:
It’s nice to see the nearby mountains in the Karimabad region offer the town a convenient source of glacier water. Unfortunately, this water is laced with mica and other minerals and effectively produces very filmy and murky village water:
After four days of settling, the glass of water we poured still looked ‘unsettling’ :\ No worries though. While we were in Karimabad, the local timura tea, green tea, and milk tea made from bottled water kept us happily. If you ever visit this area, we’d highly recommend staying clear of the local water.
